In August 1969, medical student Lizzie Baker sets off on a trip to Woodstock with her boyfriend and two other couples. When their van breaks down outside of Morganton, North Carolina, the group decides to hike up nearby Brown Mountain while they wait for the repairs to be finished.
Lizzie’s interest in nature prompts her to go on a walk by herself, hoping to get a glimpse of the legendary Brown Mountain Lights. When she unexpectedly encounters one, she naively reaches out to touch it and is thrown back in time to a place and lifestyle she comes to hate—the Antebellum South.
Lizzie is taken in by three sisters who are healers. With them, she is able to put her knowledge as a medical student to good use. She finds a trusted friend in Abbie, the youngest sister, and through a budding romance with the son of a plantation owner is drawn into the dangerous world of the Underground Railroad.
With a bloody and violent war looming on the horizon, at a time when women are looked upon as less than equal, Lizzie struggles to accept the differences that surround her every day in this new and challenging world. Wanting nothing more than to return home, she and Abbie continually search for the light Lizzie travelled through, hoping it will take her back to her time.
But if she finds it, will she decide to stay or go?

Yes, the heroine Lizzie goes back in time, but this time through the mysterious lights seen on Brown Mountain in North Carolina. The time she slips to is 1859, some 110 years before her time of 1969. A student in medical school she came upon the lights as she and her boyfriend Ben camp on the mountain one night on the way to Woodstock. One she goes through the light she comes out disoriented realizing she doesn't recognize her surroundings which are now lush and overgrown. She is found by Abbie, one of three sisters who take her in. The sisters are mountain healers and Lizzie naturally begins to help. She learns a lot about herbs but puts her own knowledge of medicine to work when a smallpox epidemic breaks out on a local slave plantation, succeeding in using variolation, a crude form of inoculation, to prevent the further spread. Other adventures occur, including a blossoming attraction to Josh, the son of the plantation owner. Josh is a conductor on the underground railroad and has vowed to free the slaves once he has ownership. At the end Abbie runs into the same light that brought her to 1859. A wonderful book! As a CC Tillery fan, I found this quite different than the Appalachian Series, which I also loved. The Brown Mountain Lights grabbed me from the first page and kept me reading, nothing else got done around here! I eagerly await the next book in the series!
I have read 4 of Ms. Tiilery's books and have found the storylines and characters appealing in their realness. Hard to stop reading once started. The story unfolds in my mind like a movie. No pages to flip to, just the flow of clear imagery and people talking to one another. If you like Appalachian stories, you'll be drawn in by Tillerys' tales.
Ladies,you have done it again,the start of a wonderful new series. I can't wait wait for the next in the series. It's a fastening new story line. At first I didn't know if I would like the book but after a few chapters it drew me right into the story line. Keep up the great work. Looking to the next in the series.
Well developed story and characters. I ran the previous series by this group of authors and was disappointed in how the series ended. It was as if the last two books were rushed and lacked the depth of the beginning of the series. I am hoping this will not happen with this series. I havent started the next book in this series but I enjoyed the first one well enough to try it.
Well I do love the C.C. Tillery books. As I expected this was another great one. I don't like it when there is not a clear and definite ending such as this. Especially when the next book isn't readily available to get my hand on. I do hope it isn't too long coming. But since this one just came out I doubt it is around the corner. I feel that books in a series should also be able to stand on their own. That's why 4 stars instead of 5. I still recommend Through The Brown Mountain Lights for a great read. You won't regret it.
I loved this book! It gripped me from the first page. Kept reading to find out what Lizzie would find on the other side of the LIGHT when it sucked her in! Can't say too much more without spoiling the plot, but the ending left me wanting more of Lizzie's adventures... and wondering what happens to her new friends on the OTHER side? And what happens to her on THIS side? Book 2, here I come. The Tillery sisters certainly know how to write... to mesmerize their readers. Congratulations on another winner, ladies.
I absolutely loved this book! The lights were a very acceptable way to move from the future to the past! I loved the three characters in the past Sarie, Abbie and Bessie who have their own secrets to keep. However they finally let Lizzie into their backwards life! What a thrill to read how they can take their healing ways and mingle them with the girl that has time traveled a little over a century in time. This time traveled lady lends them a hand with their healing ways. I loved the fact that a romance of sort blooms with Lizzie and Josh I'm a sucker for a romance of any kind. When the Tillery sisters sit down and write a book they write one that you can sink your teeth into! They have a natural instinct for Southern charm. I'm a Southern girl myself which endeared all their books to me I've read them all unless they have some hidden away lol! I recommend all of their books if you want to laugh and cry all at the same time!
